"The file isn't compatible with QuickTime Player"

If you render a 4K video using the Chrome browser and try to open it on your Mac using QuickTime Player, you might see an error saying the file is corrupted or incompatible.

The file is actually completely fine!

You can safely upload this exact file directly to TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts without any issues. They will process it perfectly in 4K.

Why does this happen?

Chrome uses a highly-optimized WebM format for screen recording, but to make the file easy to upload to social media, we save it with an .mp4 extension. QuickTime Player on Mac is extremely strict about file extensions and refuses to play it, even though social media platforms instantly recognize it and process it flawlessly.

Workarounds to watch it locally:

  • Drag and drop the video file directly into a new Chrome or Firefox tab to watch it.
  • Use a media player like VLC (which plays everything).
  • For a true QuickTime-compatible MP4 file, export your videos using the Safari browser instead of Chrome.
